Truth :

I’m a guitarist (female, 19 years old) and I’m basically just trying to network and get contacts and stuff like that because I want to be in a band. A few rock bands are coming to my college campus to perform and I want to approach them, but I really don’t know how to strike up a conversation. I don’t want to appear like a GROUPIE.

So, what do you think I should do?

Approach them as you would any other person. Be kind, respectful and funny. You’ll do fine.

Stay cool. Usually these opportunities kinda present themselves. You can’t just force it. A friend of mine had a clever idea when he was really young; he and a buddy posed as writers for the local high school/college news. One time it got them in a dressing room, drinking beers with two members of Rush. He’s got photos to prove it. Amazing.

Thank them politely for the concert. Bands LOVE that. Then you could possibly give them a demo and contact info? It’s hard to tell and depends on the band, but most just like knowing that people appreciate their music. When you give them the demo/etc. make sure you remember that they are busy people “Hi, I know you’re really busy, but I would really appreciate it if you could listen to my sound and let me know what you think.” If they seem interested when you’re there, great, stay and chat. But if they’re busy with other things back off and be cool.

Be yourself. If they haven’t played, say you’re looking forward to hearing them, if they just played and you enjoyed it, say you thought they were awesome, maybe ask questions about how/when/why they wrote the music the way they did.
